Intro

In short AUBE is a self-proclaimed sound designer. Although considered a “noisition” or noise musician/artist, AUBE shuns this. The argument can stand that design is art, but that is really not the point of this presentation. I was drawn to AUBE because he is not like other Japanese noise, or really any noise for that matter. Regardless of his self-proclamation of what he is or is not, AUBE can be grouped with noise artists and thus I will refer to him as one.  What really separates AUBE from other "artists" and drew me to him is that he is a minimalist. His art is not about sound, performance, or reactions, just his creations. He does not do anything or look shocking at all. He sets up on a small table with his various equipment and turns knobs. It would be pretentious to say what his intentions are, but I would say a good educated guess is that he wants to do as much with as little as possible. So here he is, AUBE, or should I say Akifumi Nakajima

Akifumi Nakajima was born in 1959 and that is pretty much all the information there is on him until his music career started in the early 80's . Although there are accounts of Nakajima's musical interest starting in the early 80's, there is no recorded material of his until he created music for an art installation in 1990 under that name AUBE. Some of AUBE's earliest work can traced back to 1991 with this track called "Hydrophobia".

Since then AUBE has released a slew of recordings and collaborations with other music and visual artists including famed noise maker Maso Yamazaki of Masonna. AUBE is considered minimalist not because of the small amount of equipment he uses which as you may see in the picture above is not the case but for his use of a single sound source and manipulation of that sound.  Akifumi Nakajima has an obseene amount of recorded material as seen on this site http://www.discogs.com/artist/Akifumi+Nakajima. AUBE is considered a pioneer of minimalist noise and has become inspiration to many including myself. I know that I was supposed to only do one art installation but this is more of a "design tribute" than an art peace.
