 Background Information

Born on March 31, 1982 in Los Angeles, California. Her parents are from Japan and though she did not grow up in Japan, she was fully imersed in its culture. One of the many cultural aspects she was exposed too was Japanese Manga comics which seemed to interest her alot and she started drawing them at a early age. The comics got her into drawing and she became a passionate manga fan trying to imatate all her favorite artists. When she hit the end of junior high she began to take private weekly lessons on painting and drawing to improve her abilities. Like most artists wanting to accelerate thier skills she went to a Fine arts college. She studied at Pratt institute in New York City and dropped out after only two years. Her experience there she said was vaulable, but she was not able to fully express herself and jump into her own areas of interest. While she didnt complete her degree, she took her artistic abilites in a new direction and has made a name for herself.

The artist and her subject matter

Since audrey was old enough to draw and read she was very interested by manga comics and art nouvea. She was intrigued by the female body and would cut out images from magazines of them and recreate the form in her own eyes. Her fascination opened up her own ideas about what she wanted to illustrate and the main context of her art is the female form and face. Her pieces represent young teenage girls in a sensual and erotic perspective and its never been something shes ashamed to use in her art. Most of the female body is exposed in her paintings and she gives each piece a dark atmosphere.

Style and Distinctive Qualities

Most of Audrey's pieces are paintings used with oil based paints on wood panels. The wood panel is her only working space as far as planning out her pieces. Unlike most artists, she does not sketch out her ideas then transfer them, she starts right on the wood. Sometimes it takes her days to get the drawing right which involves lots of erasing and sometimes even sanding out the parts she cant erase. After she deicides on sketch, she applies acrylic gel medium so she can actually paint on the surface of the wood. When she starts using the oils on the painting, she uses just thin layers and washes at first. She concentrates on faces and eyes and leaves the rest of the piece very translucent and seperated. Once the painting is complete she uses a couple coats of polyurethane.

"Watching Shadows"

Though Audrey is more popular in the states than Japan, she has started showing her work there just last year. In March of 2009 she did her first show at the Space Yui Gallery in Tokyo where she displayed about 10 paintings, other editions and some exclusive prints. Audrey uses wood for most of her paintings but for this show in particular she created a lot of her pieces on wood from Tokyo Hands in Japan.
