Japanese Dubbing ~by DAVID HOWARD

Many know and enjoy the influx of Japanese animation imported into America each year but not many delve deeper into the voice-over acting that makes these animated programs possible. Wether you perfer the original Japanese with subtitles or English Dubbing, the art of voice-acting plays a big role in the world of anime. Though the acting style would seem similar for both Japanese and English, the processes are actually completely different. In Japan, the main cast of an animated film or series gathers in one room with a row of microphones and their scripts. The voice-actors then stand a in a row a few feet back from the row of microphones. When it is their turn to speak, they approach the mic, say their lines, and step back into their place. The Western style is a deep contrast to this group approach. When dubbing in English, Each voice-actor enters a small sound bothwhere they run through their lines alone. On occasion, two or even three of the leading character voice-actors will record their lines at the same time but never the entire main cast.

For my project, I have taken a scene from the anime Fullmetal Alchemist and re-dubbed the scene in English using the traditional Japanese technique.

Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師 Hagane no Renkinjutsushi?, lit. "Alchemist of Steel"), based on the manga of the same name by Hiromu Arakawa which began publishing in January of 2001. It was adapted to 51 episodes on Japanese television beginning in October of 2003 and a sequel movie. The manga and animations have been acclaimed in both Japan and the Western world.
