Post WWII and Economic Expansion
Spring 1945 - Japan is defeated in Okinawa
- Captured islands taken away.
- U.S. controls Ryuku Islands.
- Food shortages
- Black Markets
- Kyoto only city not destroyed
August, 1945 - April 1952
- Occupation of Japan by the US.
- General MacArthur 1st Supreme Commander.
- Military leaders put on trial for war crimes.
- 500 of them committed suicide before they were tried.
1947: A New Constitution
- The emperor is no longer the political or military leader in Japan.
- Universal suffrage and human rights instilled.
- Japan was forbidden (still is) to ever wage war against anyone, ever again.
- Shintoism and the State were separated for good.
MacArthur tried to break up concentrations of power
- Broke up the Zaibatsu (precursors to today’s corporations).
- Decentralized the educational system and police.
With the advent of the cold war, the US changed some of the constitution.
- Asked for persecution of communists.
- Stationed more troops in Japan.
- Urged Japan to have a Self Defense Force to defend the country (even though it went against the new constitution).
After The Korean War
- Japan’s economy accelerates. Japans Post War Economic Boom
- Changes in society, living standards.
- LDP (Liberal Democratic Party) is established as dominant party.
- Pollution.
Protesting in the 60’s
- Against pollution from increasing industry.
- Vocal about Vietnam War.
- Concerned about the American idea to start the SDF.
