OutsiderJapan
What exactly is the point of this class?
- Tensions between society and the individual
- Leading to definition of oneself as "inside" or "outside"
- Examine art that expresses that relationship, its inherent tensions in a number of ways
- Aesthetic as reaction to prevailing common view (anti-aesthetics)
- Using an art form that is inherently "lowbrow" to express "fine art" themes and styles
- Adopting the persona of the outsider as an artist to separate one's work from the mainstream
- Adopting methods that erase the boundary between observer and artist (i.e. making fiction reality)
-
- Examing these all in the context of Japan, where a heightened sense of responsibility for others (and repression of individual desires) has historically been the norm.
- Comparing that to U.S. culture, where individuality, at least in theory, historically has been the goal
What do I hope you got out of it:
1. The patience/goodwill to absorb art, or "art" before evaluating or dismissing it.
2. A bit of cultural knowledge about Japan, as well as the U.S.
3. The confidence in your ability to listen to information that is (mostly) foreign to you, compare it to what you already know, and analyze it in a "critical thinking" manner
How do I go to Japan?
1. JET program
2. Teach English at an Eikaiwa
3. Cultural Visa
4.
