Takashi Miike is a controversial Japanese director who has produced over 70 films in his lifetime. He was born on August 24 1960 in Osaka, Japan. Miike graduated film school at Yokohana Vocational School of Broadcast and Film and is quoted as saying he rarely attended class. After a short stent in television production he made his theatrical debut with his film The Third Gangster. Shinjuku Triad Society was his first film to gain notoriety and displayed the use of extreme violence, something that would become a trademark of his throughout his film career.
Miike's works include themes of violence and sexual perversion, displaying bloodshed and extreme gore in almost a cartoony fashion. He is well known for his dark sense of humor and pushing the limits of censorship as far as he can take them. Although these extreme elements are what makes him stand out in the crowd of Japanese filmmakers he is also known for being a very versatile director making films in many genres including musicals and children's movies. It has been said that he is becoming a more radical and mainstream director at the same time.
AUDITION
One of Miike's most famous films is the 1999 cult classic horror film called Audition. Audition is the story of a widowed man named Shigeharu Aoyama trying to find a lover by auditioning women. Things go terribly wrong when the seemingly innocent ex-ballerina, Asami Yamasaki, he chooses ends up being a psychopath. The film is renowned for its calm plot up until the end of the movie where there is a famously gruesome torture scene. Many people walked out during the screenings of the film including people who were rushed to the hospital and some who collapsed from shock. Here is the trailer:
ICHI THE KILLER
Ichi the Killer is one of Miike's most controversial works and has also gained a cult following in the West and all over the world. It is based on the manga by the same name. Ichi... tells the story of Kakihara, a yakuza enforcer who loves to give pain and on an equal level loves to recieve it. Ichi, the character who gives the movie its name, is a naturally timid person but becomes violent when enraged and has crying fits after he kills. The film uses the recurring theme's in Miike's films of extreme violence, gore, and sex. Britain and Hong Kong refused to screen the original versions because of the violence, especially towards women. At the Toronto International Film Festival screening of the film vomit bags were given out as a joke. Here is the trailer:
