Ganguro Gals!!

What is Ganguro?

Ganguro is a fashion trend that began in the 1990s and is still quite popular in Japan. The peak of this fashion was around the year 2000, but the style is still fairly prevalent in the Shibuya and Ikebukuro districts in Tokyo. Though it is not clear why this particular fashion trend began, it has been speculated that it is meant to be an outward expression of rebellion against the very traditional and demanding society if Japan.

Is Ganguro fashion meant to be rebellious..........                                                                or is it just fun?!

What does Ganguro look like?

Ganguro fashion is mostly practiced by young women (though there is a smaller group of Ganguro men). Ganguro individuals typically have a very deep, somewhat orange, tan or nearly black face and very light hair coloring. Though some may keep a natural light blond color, it is common to for a Ganguro person to have "bleach blond" or "lifted silver" hair coloring. Hairaccessories are also common in this trend and are typically big, bright, and gaudy.  White concealer or paste is applied on the eyes, lips, and sometimes the bridge of the nose and a very light, sparkly blush is applied to the upper cheek. Clothing is typically very vibrant and playful. Bright colors, stripes, bows, flowers, glitter, stickers, and tights are all commonly used in the Ganguro world, and are a perfect example of "cuteness" in Japanese culture

Types of Ganguro:

Though there are numerous types of Ganguro, the two most common are the Yamanba and Manba. They are more vibrant and extreme than the average Ganguro and these two divisions wear brightly colored contacts and have even darker tans. These two divisions have their own differences, however. One of the key differences between these two divisions is their use of eyeshadow. Yamanba individuals only wear the infamous white eyeshadow above the eyes, while the Manba wear it above and below the eyes. Yamanba eventually became even more outrageous and Manba made a 2008 comeback after fading away for a time.

These girls are most likely following the trends of the Manba Ganguros because they have extremely

dark skin and wear eyeshadow above and below their eyes. The facial stickers also made

a comeback around 2008 with the revival of the Manba style.

Ganguro of any type is certainly defined by the "cutesy!"

This video is short, but gives a good idea of how broad

                                                           the Ganguro spectrum can be.

Ganguro style makeup is pretty wild, but it takes a lot of time

and effort to apply it properly.
