Assignment:

Choose one of these three options:

- Write a 3-4 page paper

- Make a Wiki page (and present it to the class)

- make sure there isn't a page with the same information already

- DO NOT just cut and paste text from another website - plagiarism laws are in effect

- YOU MUST link to your page from somewhere else on the site

- Make a piece of art (and present it to class

- it can be any format, any media, any length, but the presentation should be 10-15 min.

G

History

  • Discuss how Japanese feudal practices contributed to making it a society based on groups (i.e. insiders) - things to looks up include:
  • Choose any of the big three Uniters of Japan (Oda Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu) and do a report describing how their methods of warring/ruling affected the individual's relationship to the group.

Wabi Sabi

  • The Iemoto system (in more detail) and how it relates to the self's relationship with society.
  • Choose any artist (Japanese or not) and explain how their work can be considered Wabi-Sabi and why
  • Choose any piece of art you know about (or any piece of art you've done, a picture you've taken, etc...) and explain why it fits into the Wabi-Sabi philosophy
  • Do a photo collection of Wabi-Sabi Photos (and post them on the wiki)

Manga

  • Choose any Manga artist and discuss how his/her work comments on self/society
  • Choose any Manga and discuss how it comments on the loyalty to oneself vs. loyalty to the group
  • Choose any Manga genre (work comics, samurai comics, etc...) and discuss how its conventions and characteristics reflect the tension between the individual and the group.
  • Choose any topic mentioned in the book Manga!Manga! that interests you and isn't fully explored already and do a short project on it.
  • Make a manga
