Hentai and Dojinshi

**Many links on this page lead directly to sites containing explicit artistic renderings of sexual behavior.  Click at your own discretion.**

Definitions:

Hentai: Outside of Japan, this is a generic term used to indicate any sexual material. In Japan, it is used only to indicate unnatural, perverse or physically impossible depictions of sex in a modern context. In an historic context, it covers all depictions of sex, and the word itself has its origins in the Meiji period.

Ecchi (Etchi): Used only in Japan to cover sex that does not fall within the definition of modern hentai. Depicts normal sex, sexualized scenarios that never become explicit, nudity or suggestive clothing. In other words: soft core.

Shunga: can be used to indicate any erotically explicit illustration, print, or painting, but usually only used in an historic context. JAANUS link.

I.                   Religious Sex: Not just a sheet with a hole in it!

Modern Hentai has its root in Japan’s oldest religious tradition: Shintoism.  Shintoism  celebrates life and encourages reverence towards any behavior that is life-affirming. As nothing is more life-affirming than sex (what with all that procreation going on), Shintoism reveres it, and phallicism is an integral part of the religious practice. Donald Richie Link

Shintoism is also very animistic. This means that Shintoism believes that all animals, as well as inanimate objects, are imbued with a spirit and life force that is just as powerful and profound as that which humans have. Therefore, in the life of the mind, a person can form complex emotional relationships with things that are not human.

**Bestiality: Not just assaulting the family dog!  "Dream of the Fisherman's Wife"

Other Stuff:

Kabuki: Originated as comic/sexual plays. All female company. Less rigid (pun intended) than traditional theater traditions. Okuni, the founder of Kabuki, was employed by a Shinto temple, though the capacity in which she served in unclear.  (probably a miko).

I.                   Hentai and the Meiji period-

After Japan was penetrated by the Black Ships, and was thereafter open for business, the production of artistic renderings of sex became much more prevalent, and the art itself became much more complex.  All of the most celebrated woodblock artists created erotic pieces (because there was a lot of money in it), though often left their names off these works (because production of this sort of thing would occasionally be frowned upon by authority figures).

Much of the art begins to reflect the influence of Western psychological interpretations of sexual fantasy.  Intersections link

Other Links (Please click. I looked at a lot of porn before I was able to find these, and am now scarred for life.  Don’t make that irrelevant.)

Link 1-Not dirty at all. I’m sure this Samurai and his apprentice are just wrestling.

Link 2-Pretty dirty stuff, but it could be worse.

Link 3-See. I told you it could be worse.

I.                   Modern Hentai-

Google it yourself, pervert.

Or not.  Hentaipop.com is a membership-based service that, for a fee, allows online access to material provided by manufacturers, as well as shared material provided by other members, although much of the content would be more appropriately defined as “dojinshi” (keep your pants on, I’m getting to that). The “fanfic” link will take you to a page that provides thumbnail descriptions of the original material that the fan fiction is based upon.

Link to interesting article, but the writer provides absolutely no sources.  Whatever.

Just for fun-Create your Own!

Beyond that, all I have to say is Google it yourself, pervert.

I.                   Dojinshi-

Dojinshi basically refers to underground manga.  Its content tends more toward actual “hentai” as opposed to “ecchi,” and its production value tends to be much better than mass produced manga.

Many links for something so underground: Click here, here, and here.

Most dojinshi is produced by small groups of people who sell the product at cost. It is marked up significantly at point-of-sale, but the artists themselves make next to no money for creating it.

Dojinshi is often a starting ground for artists trying to break into the wonderful world of mainstream manga production.  But there are many exceptions to this. Already successful manga artists often produce dojinshi as well, usually under pseudonyms.

A lot of dojinshi depicts characters or storylines from previously copyrighted material used in strange and unusual ways.  Which is illegal. But because the producers are not making money at it, they don’t get sued.  And because dojinshi drives the market toward its mainstream inspiration, as well as providing a training ground for future artists, the mainstream manga producers tolerate the sale of the material.  And Thank God, because where would the world be without this!

But seriously, many mainstream manga artists feel creatively stifled by their publishing houses, and seek opportunities to be more creative.  Very often, these “copyright violations” are perpetrated by the original creators of the material in question, who are merely telling stories that their publishing houses have rejected, or are experimenting with storytelling styles that are beyond the mainstream.  So creating “fan fiction” in Japan is considered a legitimate way of spending time, unlike here in America, where it qualifies you for the Presidency of Loserville.

Dojinshi also often depicts storylines involving people in real life (also incredibly illegal).

I don’t feel like typing anymore.  Click here for the bizarre story of Nevada-Tan, an 11-year-old girl who killed a classmate in school with a box cutter. You can also click here, but mainly I link to this site because the author creates the word “tragedygasm” to describe the media attention given to this incident!

And click here for some artistic depictions of Nevada-Tan.  (Don’t read the words, though. You know that line in A Separate Peace where John Knowles says “Sarcasm is a tool of the weak-minded?”  He was totally right about that.)

Side Note: Nevada-Tan’s favorite movie, Battle Royale, kicks ass!

**Google “Nevada-Tan” at your own risk. Some suburban rap-rock band in Germany went and named themselves after her earlier this year.  They suck.**
