You will be graded on several aspects of your project

  • Talk about social classes in Japan and how they affected the individual/society relationship.
  • Talk about how comic books were affected by Japanese militarism before and during WWII
  • Choose any of the big three Uniters of Japan (Oda Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu) and do a report describing how their methods of warring/ruling affected the individual's relationship to the group.

Wabi Sabi

  • The Iemoto system (in more detail) and how it relates to the self's relationship with society.
  • Choose any artist (Japanese or not) and explain how their work can be considered Wabi-Sabi
  • Choose any piece of art you know about (or any piece of art you've done, a picture you've taken, etc...) and explain why it fits into the Wabi-Sabi philosophy
  • Talk about the history of Wabi-Sabi and why it, as an art, is an anti-aesthetic and why that is somehow important or interesting.

  • Choose any Manga and discuss how it comments on self/society
